Our Story

We’re Tony and Cody Klein, the father and son team behind Klein Outdoors, LLC and Depth Vector.

The idea started on the drive home from a fishing trip in Ontario. We kept coming back to one thought: we could fish more effectively if we better understood where our lures were running. And when the fish weren’t biting, we could adjust with confidence.

When you’re trolling, a couple of feet can make a difference. We had spent years relying on familiar calculations, rules of thumb, and advice passed between anglers. We caught fish, so we rarely questioned those assumptions. But were our baits actually where we thought they were?

The trolling apps we tried didn’t give us the detail, usability, or ongoing improvements we were looking for. With our combined experience in technology and fishing, and much of the equipment needed for testing already on hand, we decided to build something ourselves.

Built Through Time On The Water

Building Depth Vector has meant nights and weekends developing software, along with countless days on the water devoted to testing. Sometimes that meant putting fishing aside to focus on measurements.

During one round of downrigger testing, we discovered that our lures were running about two and a half feet away from the depth our usual mental math predicted. We had been catching fish and trusting that calculation for years. It made us reconsider how many slow days we had blamed on fish that “just weren’t biting.”

We brought that same curiosity to lead core, bare line, snap weights, and divers, testing the methods we had long accepted because they were simply what everyone did.

Why We’re Building Depth Vector

Our goal is to give trolling anglers a modern, practical tool that helps them understand their lure depth and make more informed adjustments.

For us, this is a chance to combine two things we love: fishing and technology. We’re building something we want to use on our own boat, with the hope that it helps other anglers get more out of their time on the water.

Thanks for checking us out.
